Hi Lupo, how much do you know about {{ImageNote}}? I'm asking because you edited the template on Wikipedia before, but it doesn't seem to be working here. Comparing the code of the template with that on Commons, the and tags are used differently. I'm wondering if that's why it's not working. But there's also an extra line of code

{{#ifeq:{{{id|{{{1}}}}}}|1|<!-- -->{{Iffile|1={{ImageNote/header}}}}<!-- -->}}

I'm not sure what it does, but maybe it needs to be added. The page is protected at the moment because it's used by a gadget (I don't know which one), so I was hoping someone else might know how to make it work. Nev1 (talk) 23:02, 23 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

  1. The added stuff you quoted above, which is present at the Commons, is just about template documentation.
  2. The template is not intended to be used manually.
  3. It's used by the ImageAnnotator gadget that was never enabled here. It was installed once for evaluation purposes.

Lupo 07:27, 24 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I manually added an annotation to a file on Wikipedia by copying the wikicode from Commons. If I changed the noinclude/includeonly tags, would it start working? Nev1 (talk) 17:13, 24 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I don't think so, even if the gadget were enabled. For files that actually reside at the Commons, the gadget uses the descriptions defined at the Commons. You don't have to copy them over. If you had chosen a file that existed locally and enabled the gadget, then it should work. However, you could then also use the gadget to add the note in the first place. (The gadget would basically make an identical edit.) If you want to play with that gadget, please read the help pages here and at the Commons. (I hope it still works here; I haven't updated the installation here in a long time.) Lupo 22:17, 24 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
In fact, I just tried, and of course it didn't work anymore here. I've updated it now, and it works again. If you enable the gadget in your user.js, you should see image notes at File:Spelterini Blüemlisalp.jpg and also at File:MacLellan's Castle 20080422 - entrance.jpg. And apparently I misremembered about local notes. The gadget does take the note from the local file description page. Frankly said, I'm not sure if this is a bug... I thought it would take those from the Commons. Lupo 22:37, 24 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
It is a bug. Since the gadget does not allow adding notes for remote files, it should also ignore any notes on a local description page of a remote file and should only take those from the remote description. Lupo 08:50, 25 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I presume this is about c:File:The Word Class Wreckin' Cru on tour in 1988..jpg. First, complain at the Commons about image deletions that happen at the Commons. Second, the link I gave is just some fanpix site; that just shows that it's copied from the Internet, it doesn't say that site had any rights to that image. Third, if you can prove that you are the photographer of that picture, send your proof via OTRS. Lupo 12:53, 5 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hello dear Lupo. Please to see you. I suppose something wrong's been happened. the picture Winter service vehicle-tehran.jpg is already taken by me so I'm its owner. The speedy deletion tag must be removed from my work. Thanks. Milad Mosapoor 09:57, 08 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Nonsense. That was an image already published, and it showed a snow blower at Whistler Mountain, not Teheran. The image came from [1], photo: Mitch Winton / coastphoto.com. Lupo 04:34, 9 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Hi again, I also added a new trademark tag for the image about the KLM puzzle. Milad Mosapoor 10:08, 08 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

It's got nothing to do with trademarks. The image shown by that puzzle itself is copyrighted and even bears a copyright mark. So a photo of that puzzle can be published under a free license only if the copyright holder formally agrees. Lupo 04:31, 9 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Photograph of Fusilier Lee Rigby

[edit]

With respect to the page Murder of Lee Rigby, The Photograph of Fusilier Lee Rigby has the incorrect copyright attribution and is not a UK Crown Copyright photograph and therefore is not available under the Open Government Licence. — Preceding unsigned comment added by UKMinistryofDefence (talkcontribs) 09:55, 17 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Maybe so. As one can see at the archived original source, the MOD stated "All content is available under the Open Government Licence, except where otherwise stated", and there was no statement that the image was copyrighted by somebody else. Looks like the MOD has now taken down the image pending a resolution of a copyright claim by a photographer[2]. Further discussions at commons:Commons:Deletion requests/File:Drummer Lee Rigby.jpg. Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. Proposed deletion of Jack (flag)

[edit]

The article Jack (flag) has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

No sources whatsoever, and not enough substantive content to merit being a distinct page from maritime flags.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Nomination of Jack (flag) for deletion

A discussion is taking place as to whether the article Jack (flag) is suitable for inclusion in Wikipedia according to Wikipedia's policies and guidelines or whether it should be deleted.

The article will be discussed at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Jack (flag) until a consensus is reached, and anyone is welcome to contribute to the discussion. The nomination will explain the policies and guidelines which are of concern. The discussion focuses on high-quality evidence and our policies and guidelines.

Users may edit the article during the discussion, including to improve the article to address concerns raised in the discussion. However, do not remove the article-for-deletion notice from the top of the article. Jm (talk | contribs) 18:43, 19 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Disputed non-free use rationale for File:Montreux Jazz Festival 1986 (poster).png

[edit]

Thank you for uploading File:Montreux Jazz Festival 1986 (poster).png. However, there is a concern that the rationale provided for using this file on Wikipedia may not meet the criteria required by Wikipedia:Non-free content. This can be corrected by going to the file description page and adding or clarifying the reason why the file qualifies under this policy. Adding and completing one of the templates available from Wikipedia:Non-free use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your file is in compliance with Wikipedia policy. Please be aware that a non-free use rationale is not the same as an image copyright tag; descriptions for files used under the non-free content policy require both a copyright tag and a non-free use rationale.

If it is determined that the file does not qualify under the non-free content policy, it might be deleted by an administrator within a few days in accordance with our criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions, please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you. -- Marchjuly (talk) 02:57, 1 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Error in your LAPI.js script

[edit]

Hi Lupo. I have recently turned on the gadget ImageAnnotator in my preferences, and I now get an annoying javascript warning in my console about "unreachable code after return statement" on every single page load. I have tracked down the error to the currentStyle function in the LAPI.DOM section. In that function you include a return statement followed by a newline and then what you expected to return:

      if (property == 'cssFloat') property = 'float';
      return
        element.ownerDocument.defaultView.getComputedStyle (element, null).getPropertyValue (property);

I assume you know this, but in case you didn't, you cannot add a line break after a return call, even if there is no semicolon ending the line. The parser is set up to basically make semicolons optional, so a line break after a return just ends the line automatically, and the next line is not executed; the script just returns silently without a value. I believe this is what is causing the warning to show up in my console, and the way to fix it would be to simply remove the line break there. Would you be willing to do that? Thanks!--Dudemanfellabra (talk) 23:20, 6 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Good catch! Fixed this and a second occurrence of the same problem. Lupo 18:48, 10 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Extended confirmed protection

[edit]

Hello, Lupo. This message is intended to notify administrators of important changes to the protection policy.

Extended confirmed protection (also known as "30/500 protection") is a new level of page protection that only allows edits from accounts at least 30 days old and with 500 edits. The automatically assigned "extended confirmed" user right was created for this purpose. The protection level was created following this community discussion with the primary intention of enforcing various arbitration remedies that prohibited editors under the "30 days/500 edits" threshold to edit certain topic areas.

In July and August 2016, a request for comment established consensus for community use of the new protection level. Administrators are authorized to apply extended confirmed protection to combat any form of disruption (e.g. vandalism, sock puppetry, edit warring, etc.) on any topic, subject to the following conditions:

  • Extended confirmed protection may only be used in cases where semi-protection has proven ineffective. It should not be used as a first resort.
  • A bot will post a notification at Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard of each use. MusikBot currently does this by updating a report, which is transcluded onto the noticeboard.

Please review the protection policy carefully before using this new level of protection on pages. Thank you.
This message was sent to the administrators' mass message list. To opt-out of future messages, please remove yourself from the list. 17:47, 23 September 2016 (UTC)

Two-Factor Authentication now available for admins

[edit]

Hello,

Please note that TOTP based two-factor authentication is now available for all administrators. In light of the recent compromised accounts, you are encouraged to add this additional layer of security to your account. It may be enabled on your preferences page in the "User profile" tab under the "Basic information" section. For basic instructions on how to enable two-factor authentication, please see the developing help page for additional information. Important: Be sure to record the two-factor authentication key and the single use keys. If you lose your two factor authentication and do not have the keys, it's possible that your account will not be recoverable. Furthermore, you are encouraged to utilize a unique password and two-factor authentication for the email account associated with your Wikimedia account. This measure will assist in safeguarding your account from malicious password resets. Comments, questions, and concerns may be directed to the thread on the administrators' noticeboard. A new user right for New Page Patrollers

[edit]

Hi Lupo.

A new user group, New Page Reviewer, has been created in a move to greatly improve the standard of new page patrolling. The user right can be granted by any admin at PERM. It is highly recommended that admins look beyond the simple numerical threshold and satisfy themselves that the candidates have the required skills of communication and an advanced knowledge of notability and deletion. Admins are automatically included in this user right.

It is anticipated that this user right will significantly reduce the work load of admins who patrol the performance of the patrollers. However,due to the complexity of the rollout, some rights may have been accorded that may later need to be withdrawn, so some help will still be needed to some extent when discovering wrongly applied deletion tags or inappropriate pages that escape the attention of less experienced reviewers, and above all, hasty and bitey tagging for maintenance. User warnings are available here but very often a friendly custom message works best.

If you have any questions about this user right, don't hesitate to join us at WT:NPR. (Sent to all admins).MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 13:47, 15 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Notification of pending suspension of administrative permissions due to inactivity

[edit]

Information icon Following a community discussion in June 2011, consensus was reached to provisionally suspend the administrative permissions of users who have been inactive for one year (i.e. administrators who have not made any edits or logged actions in more than one year). As a result of this discussion, your administrative permissions will be removed if you do not return to activity within the next month. If you wish to have these permissions reinstated should this occur, please post to the Wikipedia:Bureaucrats' noticeboard and the userright will be restored per the re-sysopping process (i.e. as long as the attending bureaucrats are reasonably satisfied that your account has not been compromised, that your inactivity did not have the effect of evading scrutiny of any actions which might have led to sanctions, that you have not been inactive for a three-year period of time, and that you have not been inactive from administrative tasks for a five year period of time). If you remain inactive for a three-year period of time, including the present year you have been inactive, you will need to request reinstatement at WP:RFA. Further, following a community discussion in March of 2018, Administrators suspended for inactivity who have not had any logged administrative activity for five years will need to request reinstatement at WP:RFA. This removal of access is procedural only, and not intended to reflect negatively upon you in any way. Good to see you pop up on my watchlist :) Haukur (talk) 10:10, 15 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

What a surprise! I thought you'd all but gone, too, but now I see you're back in force since this year. I guess my activity here will remain at current extremely low levels, though. Lupo 21:24, 15 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, I got pulled back in somehow. Mostly absent for a long time because my academic work scratches the same itch. But there's also something to be said for working on articles people might actually read.
I miss you at Commons which is as much a mess as ever with poor sourcing and confused copyright claims. Haukur (talk) 22:23, 15 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Nomination of Proprietary software for deletion

[edit]
A discussion is taking place as to whether the article Proprietary software is suitable for inclusion in Wikipedia according to Wikipedia's policies and guidelines or whether it should be deleted.

The article will be discussed at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Proprietary software until a consensus is reached, and anyone, including you, is welcome to contribute to the discussion. The nomination will explain the policies and guidelines which are of concern. The discussion focuses on high-quality evidence and our policies and guidelines.

Users may edit the article during the discussion, including to improve the article to address concerns raised in the discussion. However, do not remove the article-for-deletion notice from the top of the article until the discussion has finished.
